What is there about a sunrise? For me, it's the beautiful and gradual flowing of pure color from darkness to brilliant sunshine. When I catch the sun rising, as I did this morning, I cannot help but wonder at the graphical transformation from night to a new day.

This morning, I sat on the porch in my robe, with a cup of hot coffee in hand to ward off the 34 degree coolness ... No, not cold ... coolness. The air was still and dry and as I snapped several pictures, trying to the capture the best representation of the event, a Momma doe and her two unruly fawns bounced around on the lawn as if it were put there just for their enjoyment ... that is until they saw me!

Hurricane Problems Extend to Pullman

Having moved from a "well-connected" community, where our cable internet connection provided us with speeds of 3,000 Kbps, it was (and it was anticipated) a real adjustment to be back to a dial-up connection. Neither cable or DSL is available here.

Even using my realiable ACN Internet service, the best we can do is 50 Kbps on one line and 28.8 Kbps on the other line ... the line I'm on right now. I talked to Verizon about the the slow speed on line two and they just said, "You're lucky to get 50 Kbps on line one: We only guarantee 28.8 Kbps on rural lines."

I looked at the alternatives: Just "grin & bear it;" try to get the Pullman wireless Internet provider to extend service to this area; or twiddle my fingers until some miracle happens and we get cable or DSL here. None of those possibilities were very appealing. So: Back in August, I ordered a satellite internet setup. It's expensive but will deliver around 750 Kpbs, downloading, and 128 Kbps, uploading.

As of today: NO satellite equipment has arrived here at the ranch! The story I'm getting - and I've checked it out with other satellite Internet providers - is FEMA has bought up all the satellite internet equipment to use for the hurricane disaster operation. (From what I have heard about FEMA, "my" equipment is probably sitting in some warehouse - unused!) I'm told that "maybe in October" the equipment will ship. From my years of experience, I suspect that "maybe" is spelled with a capital M!

So here I set, all brokenhearted, watching my files creep in and out of Verizon's phone lines at about the same speed as the angleworm trying to get away from the robin, I'm watching creeping around in our yard.

(As I proof-read this note, Jacquie is looking over my shoulder and telling me that someone is going to say, "You spoiled kid - you are upset because you don't have high-speed Internet service and those poor folks don't have a place to live." She's right, of course, but I don't think my 30" dish sitting unused in a warehouse is doing much for disaster relief. Besides, just for the record, we do care: Jacquie and I gave a four-figure donation to the Red Cross - so don't flame me! LOL)

Fall colors were popping out all over.

We took a little Sunday Stroll on the WSU campus, today. We visited the art gallery where they had a large exhibit of Roy Lichtenstein's print art. He is considered to be the greatest pop print artist of all times.

A Hard Day's Work

We're installing a 13,000 KW backup generator. This is a very cool unit that will automatically start and pick up the load of the essential things in the house whenever the power fails. One of the problems we had to solve was to run a separate line to the pump house so we could also have water. Digging the ditch was a hard (two) day's job. Today we layed the wiring and covered up the ditch. Both Jacquie and I are glad that part is over.

Last day of Summer: We woke up to 29 degrees. Clear day with an expected high of 72 deg. That's a temperature swing of 43 degrees ... Quite a change from Orange County, CA!

No Hunting

Today, with the help of Jacquie and sister Carol, we pounded in a bunch of "NO HUNTING" signs. Funny thing, as we were pounding in a sign "Burt" stopped and asked if it was OK to hunt birds on our property. He was a nice guy, but we told him no.

Patrick, Lori, Andi & Ali dropped in today for a visit. We started the day off with breakfast in Pullman's "Old European Waffle House," where, as usual, we all ate toooo much. (But is was worth it!)

When we got home, the girls jumped in the pool and we all had a lot of fun.

Can hunting season be far away?

We're painting the mounting boards for the "NO HUNTING" signs. By the end of this weekend, they will all be in place.

Maybe next year, after the deer eat everything in sight, we'll change the signs to read, "HUNTERS WELCOME" ... but, don't count on it.

We're frequently asked, "What are you going to do with 58-acres of farmland?" Answer: "Let someone else farm it." Yesterday, our tenant farmer was doing "something" to the smaller field, near our house. He had just finished harvesting a crop of garbanzo beans, also know as chickpeas, and was, for lack of a better term, scratching the remaining vines back into the ground. At the same time he was adding some kind of soil nutrient to the ground from the tank you can see.

It's fun to watch all the action, even though we don't really know what they are doing. What they are doing is obvious at harvesting time, but at other times, it's pretty mysterious ... at least to us Fighter Pilots! LOL

(This field is about 500 yards in front of our house.)

Back In The Saddle Again

Back in the saddle again.
After almost a year absence, I’m resuming my Blog. (I know you’ll all be thrilled to death about that! LOL)

A very large amount of water has “passed under the bridge” since then:
My father, Elbern Raymond Daisley, passed away …
My brother, Richard Scott Daisley, passed away …
My brother-in-law, Richard Hemus, passed away …
We moved to Pullman, WA …

What can I say, except: “Life goes on.”

I intend to start posting a “Picture Of The Day,” with brief comments.
What you can expect: There will NOT be a new picture every day … you can count on that.
However, I’ll try to do one whenever possible and I’ll try to make it interesting.

As always, YOUR personal posted comments will be appreciated by all, as they are probably better and more relevant than mine.
